The Windham Regional Commission (WRC) is a voluntary association of 27 towns in southeastern Vermont operating under the authority of the Vermont Municipal and Regional Planning and Development Act (24 V.S.A. Chapter 117). The purpose (or mission) of the WRC is to assist member towns to provide effective local government and to work cooperatively with them to address regional issues.
A Vermont Regional Planning Commission (RPC) is a group of neighboring towns whose residents are joined economically, socially and geographically into one larger community – the Region. Formed in 1965, the Windham Regional Commission is the oldest and one of the largest RPC’s in Vermont.
The Windham Region is bordered by Bennington and Windsor Counties to the west and north, New Hampshire to the east, and Massachusetts to the south. The area included is approximately 920 square miles, or nearly 590,000 acres.
East to west, the region averages about 25 miles wide. North to south, it extends 35 miles.
Stratton Mountain, at 3,936 feet, is the region’s highest point. The lowest point, at 200 feet, is on the Connecticut River in Vernon.
